Markus Sillanpää is a senior research scientist at Finnish Environment Institute SYKE. He has over two-decade experience in developing analytical approaches to study the sources, fate and effects of environmental contaminants such as microplastics, engineered nanoparticles and atmospheric aerosol particles. Recently, his research has focused on the single particle and imaging µFTIR-analysis of microplastics, the development of sample pretreatment methods for different environmental media, and the release of microplastic fibres from textiles during machine washes and tumble drying.
