Prof. Portman heads the MarCoast Ecosystem Integration Lab whose members study policy questions related to and influencing the interface of land and sea. Questions of environmental protection are at the core of research she undertakes, often combining mixed research methods and spatial analysis. Projects include research on land-based marine litter in near shore environments, green-blue (marine) infrastructure, marine spatial planning and stormwater management policies affecting marine and coastal environments. She is a member of Scientific Advisory Board of the Marine Sciences at Christian Albrechts University
